St George's Centre & Development Project

The interior of the new hallProject Plan

The £0.6mn St George's Development Project is a significant commitment by the Church for the local community. The main phases of the Project were the provision of a new hall and a Church Annexe which together comprise the St George's Centre. This provides much needed facilities for Wash Common - with uses as diverse as adult education, youth counselling, ante & post-natal clinics, fitness classes, playgroups, private functions and society meetings.

Progress on Phase I, the new hall, became a priority when the previous hall had to be closed permanently at the start of 1995. Building work started in the summer of 1996, by which time nearly £300,000 had been raised towards the total cost of over £350,000. The Hall Entrance The new hall was officially dedicated and opened at the end of January 1997 by the Archdeacon of Berkshire, the Venerable Mike Hill.

Building the Annexe

A further £200,000 was required to add an Annexe to the south side of the Church, providing more meeting rooms and facilities. The remaining elements of the development included decoration and improved sound and lighting. The relighting of the Church was completed by Easter 2001. The final fundraising was completed in 2003. The new lighting
The Development Project has gained wide support from the local community, Newbury Businesses, the local councils and a variety of charitable trusts. At the meeting where Newbury District Council agreed to contribute £30,000 towards the Project a councillor said:

"Every credit should be given to the church for taking unto themselves what, if we had the cash, we should be doing ourselves."
Building the Annexe The new hall and centre is being used by a very wide range of local community groups (including the Busy Kids after school group, dance groups, slimming clubs, music groups, and many others) as well as by church and other groups and for private functions such as weddings and birthday parties. There are facilities in the Centre to accomodate groups from less than 10 to 220.
